Margery Fish (1892–1969) created East Lambrook Manor Garden and shaped the modern understanding of the English cottage‑garden style. Her work at this now Grade I listed Somerset garden remains one of the most influential contributions to twentieth‑century gardening.
However, no garden is static and, over its almost ninety year history, the garden has continued to evolve. For example, trees planted by Mrs. Fish have gently aged and, successive owners have added their own ideas. Regardless of these changes, the garden has remained true to its cottage garden style. This gentle evolution has created a more mature and balanced place. Furthermore, it changes with the seasons resulting in a garden with year-round interest.
Today, the garden is maintained by our staff, and a dedicated group of volunteers, who share a deep passion for gardening. This shared passion creates a sense of community naturally extends to our guests. Many of our guests arrive wanting to experience Margery Fish’s legacy; however, they return again drawn by the promise of the changing seasons. This visitor support is essential to keeping this Historic Somerset Garden open.
